I can only hope that this is a paradigm shift for how they approach online games from now on because I want more of this in all of their other series with online play. For some reason Nintendo went all out in creating a seamless online experience in this game that completely outclasses every other game they've ever released. Can you think of a single other Nintendo game that has online features nearly this robust? Like, nothing else comes even remotely close. I don't even need to qualify that with saying it's "the best among the ND Cube games" like I did with Super Mario Party it really does stand with the top games in the series in general.Īnd what makes this so shocking is that this is a 1st-party Nintendo game. I can safely say this game is among the best in the series because of how the online is handled combined with the strong core board/minigame mechanics. Still though, this is basically everything I could've asked for. Considering just how robust the online is in this game, I have to assume random matchmaking was intentionally left out for group play to avoid griefing, but there are more elegant solutions to this. It's not a big deal considering how fast it is to find players right now, but it's still a bit of an annoyance.

Instead, you need to form a lobby then post a room code online somewhere (likely on Discord). With all that said, let's talk about that above mentioned caveat: if you have local players you can't use random matchmaking to play online. It's shocking just how well this game performs compared to something like Smash Ultimate, and this is in a game with 4 online players! Also a tremendous step up from how Super Mario Party performs. great! Like, there are small hiccups here and there but after a dozen or so online games I've never felt like the result of any particular minigame was affected by latency or anything like that. Compare this to Super Mario 3D World, where unless you're the host your gameplay progress is not saved. Heck, even if you're not player 1 in a local game you still get coins and EXP so long as you sign in to your Nintendo account. Even if you're a guest in someone else's lobby you still earn coins and EXP. These weren't really shown off prior to release but they are fantastic and I want them in every game from now on.
#Mario party 8 online game Patch
For over a decade now it has been possible for Nintendo to implement online functionality into its Mario Party releases, but up until earlier this year when Super Mario Party got a random patch that put in online play, they simply haven't bothered to do it.Īs a result, I hadn't purchased any new Mario Party games since Mario Party 8/DS (actual low quality of said games notwithstanding). I want to make this its own thread because I think this game represents a significant milestone in terms of how Nintendo handles online games.įirst, a preface: Ever since Mario Party 8 I've always been wanting to play a Mario Party game online.
